Success doesn't happen overnight. The people who seem able to pull off any victory in a brief period have paid their dues. That's right. They weren't born that way. They endured a long process of disappointment, failure, and pain. If you see a lot of winners around you, it's because they put in the time.
The good news is we can do the same.
Discipline is not just about achieving our goals. It's also about becoming a better person. Certain people need more discipline than others. To become part of the solution, we must know how to control and constructively channel our emotions. All of this requires discipline.
Discipline is Something we do
Discipline involves action. It is the ability to do things we'd rather avoid; however, it may take us to the next level. Discipline also allows us to do what we have committed to, no matter how inconvenient or uncomfortable.
There are different types of Discipline:
- There is mental discipline: focus and don't get distracted.
- Emotional discipline involves our memories. Most of us have a past that triggers or evokes strong emotions. We cannot help but feel sad, enraged or guilty once we start thinking about that memory. The challenge is to separate the thought from the emotional baggage it has. Thus, We are more likely to make better decisions and preserve our relationships. It takes courage to ignore our raw emotional state and focus on doing the right thing.
- Physical discipline involves day-to-day decisions and behavioural patterns involving our body. It is making healthier diet habits, exercising to get in shape and overall getting healthier.
- Sexual discipline. It doesn't matter whether you're married or single. When we interact with people, there will be instances of sexual temptation. Abstinence is the best option for mutual respect, and we know it.
Every Day is an Opportunity to Become More Disciplined
Discipline is like a mental muscle; the more we do things, the better we get at them. We can build a field using the things we're already doing by challenging ourselves intentionally and through daily opportunities. Let's track and monitor our discipline journey by creating a system to hold us accountable.
Remember: baby steps still step forward. We can do this!
"We all must suffer one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret." - Jim Rohn.
